Students wrapping sandwiches in foil

Our Story

A Simple Promise.

PB&J Promise began with something almost everyone recognizes: a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

It is simple. It is familiar. And, most importantly, it can help feed someone who is hungry.

The Founder

Elena Settembrino

Elena Settembrino founded PB&J Promise while attending Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Miami.

Her goal was to create a service initiative that students could participate in directly, not simply by making a donation, but by giving their time and seeing what their collective effort could accomplish.

Every week, students gather to turn donated bread, peanut butter and jelly into hundreds of individually prepared sandwiches. The process is intentionally simple:

Collect. Assemble. Deliver. Repeat.

I. Donated supplies

Donations from Publix and other local businesses and families supply the bread, peanut butter, jelly and additional food items that fill the tables each week.

II. Hundreds of sandwiches

Student volunteers then gather to assemble the food. What starts as cases of bread and jars of peanut butter and jelly quickly becomes hundreds of ready-to-eat sandwiches.

III. To the fridge

Elena then delivers the food to community refrigerators operated by Buddy System MIA throughout Miami, helping make fresh food readily accessible within the community.

Students Serving Their Community

PB&J Promise also creates an easy, hands-on way for Carrollton students to serve.

Students who need to complete school community service hours can spend that time working alongside classmates, making sandwiches and preparing food that will be distributed directly into their own community.

But the goal is bigger than fulfilling service hours.

It is about developing a habit of service.

It is about understanding that helping someone does not always require a complicated solution.

And it is about showing what young people can accomplish when they work together consistently.

Hundreds of sandwiches. Every week.

One sandwich may seem small. Hundreds of sandwiches every week are something much bigger.

That is the PB&J Promise.Jam Packed with Joy.
